VFR Mastery is a continuing series of online, scenario-based workshops. Each month, we provide a challenging VFR scenario that tests your knowledge and hones your decision-making skills.
It’s more than reading another article or watching another video. VFR Mastery delivers a powerful way to keep your head in the game and gain valuable experience from the comfort of your computer.
“When it comes to exercising IFR thinking, the program that I was most impressed with was the IFR Mastery Series from PilotWorkshops.”
“PilotWorkshop’s IFR Mastery Series hits a sweet-spot mix of material to do on your own schedule and interactively – especially if you spend time in the discussion groups.”
IFR: The Missing Lesssons
This video program offers a fresh look at instrument flying and fills in important concepts that get rushed through, glossed over, or completely forgotten during IFR training.
"Great video on how to find and use "the numbers" for IFR flying. I wish I had THAT as my first IFR lesson."
Real World IFR
Real World IFR is a series of videotaped, end-to-end IFR flights, with increasing complexity as you move through the program. There is a briefing before each flight, so you’ll know what to expect. Then you follow IFR veteran Keith Smith on flights in various airspace and weather conditions, some in his high-performance Lancair 360 and others in an FAA certified flight simulator with live ATC interaction.
As you fly along, Keith talks you through each task and procedure as he completes it. You will hear all of his ATC interactions so you will know the proper phraseology to use in all phases of an IFR flight. There are no shortcuts – you will follow the flight in real-time from engine start to engine shut down. Each flight is followed by a debrief to ensure you retain the key takeaways.
Real World VFR
Real World VFR is delivered in a series of ten recorded, end-to-end flights, spanning a wide variety of airports and terrain. These flights were designed to be challenging, yet accessible to a proficient private pilot. They don’t require superhuman skill, just proper preparation and thought.
Each flight starts with a thorough briefing, then you follow pilot Keith Smith through the flights in real time as he tackles unusual takeoffs, approaches, landings, airports, airspace and navigation that could challenge any pilot flying VFR. You’ll also get thorough debriefs with Keith and his CFI as they discuss the flight and its learning points.
Real World Coast to Coast
If you’ve wanted to use your airplane for long-range business or personal travel but lack the experience, this program gives you the confidence needed to take your flying to the next level.
Follow Keith Smith through sixteen flights that are captured on HD video cameras. You’ll also watch him plan each flight with a detailed briefing (using ForeFlight) and then debrief after landing.
The view over Keith’s shoulder reveals terrific insights. You see exactly what he sees and hear exactly what he hears. Watching Keith sweat it out on these flights gives you a window into procedures, techniques, ATC interactions and critical decision-making you can’t get any other way. Keith makes mistakes and not every flight goes as planned—because it’s real, unscripted flying! That’s what makes this program unique.
“I have been a fan of PilotWorkshops offerings for several years but recently I purchased the coast to coast program. I am a 600 hour IFR pilot and I must say that this is the gold at the end of the rainbow for my needs. I completely needed exactly what this program offers. I so often wanted to follow other pilots from start to finish on trips like this, and now I can!”
IFR Proficiency Series
The IFR Proficiency Series is specifically designed to improve your skills in every aspect of instrument flight, focusing on the areas that matter most. Our instructors take you through their own personal experiences and offer tips learned from decades of teaching instrument pilots. Their stories are powerful and contain valuable lessons you will not forget.
Learn to safely plan your IFR flights, manage workload in the cockpit, work effectively with ATC, avoid hazardous weather and manage common in-flight emergencies.
I have learned so much in the IFR Proficiency and Real World IFR programs. I love what you've done and the format in which it is presented. Your products are my "go to" when I'm trying to learn a new concept or refresh procedures.
This series focuses on improving your flying fundamentals, the finer points that will keep you alive and out of trouble.
The workshops are taught by highly accomplished “Airmen” that have risen to the top of their professions as airline, military and corporate pilots. They are also award-winning flight instructors who share their personal experiences and tips learned from decades of real world flying.
The workshops have a “back to basics” focus that pilots of all experience levels will find refreshing and useful. Our instructors offer straight-forward, no-nonsense tips and techniques that are easily integrated into your cockpit.
“..a great learning tool for any pilot who wants a painless path to the experience typically gained by scar tissue.”
IFR Weather Briefings
A video program for pilots who want a simpler weather program that gets to right the heart of it…
- Which tools do I use to answer this preflight weather question?
- How do I find what I need quickly using these tools?
It teaches the power-briefing skills every IFR pilot should have, but few do. It details what tool to use with only the bits of weather theory relevant to the specific weather challenge.
If you’re new to IFR flying, this information will be gold. If you have lots of experience, you might fill a hole in your knowledge, or discover a new application—or shortcoming—for a tool you already use.
Mastering The Skew-T Diagram
Many pilots have heard of the Skew-T log (p) diagram. Some even know a trick or two for using it. But few have learned to master its full power. For IFR pilots, it’s a real game-changer. The Skew-T diagram is one of the best kept secrets in aviation and one of the most versatile power tools in the pilot’s preflight planning toolbox.
This program shows you how to drill down on specific places and altitudes like no other tool to predict cloud bases, cloud tops, cloud layers, turbulence, icing, and thunderstorms with greater precision and accuracy.
“I am amazed at the quality of your Skew-T workshop. You are one of the first instructors I’ve encountered with a substantive body of knowledge that is independent of flying skills, per se, but which is vital to piloting, no matter the level. And it is so applicable to any pilot, at any level, in any aircraft!”
Pilot-Friendly GPS Manuals
PilotWorkshops’ family of Pilot-Friendly GPS Manuals provides simple, step-by-step instructions for getting the most from your GPS unit. Developed by a highly experienced pilot, you’ll find the focus is on accomplishing the tasks you need vs. the “buttonology” of most manufacturer-supplied manuals.
Available for most popular handheld and panel-mount units.
Pilot-Friendly Manual for IFR Communications
Consider this manual a Field Guide to all the things IFR pilots and controllers say.
It eases the pain many pilots feel by using the secret to IFR radio work: Virtually all communications follow a script. Once you know the basic script, the variations become simple, and that’s how this book works.
I have only read the first few pages of the newly arrived VFR Comm book and I can't wait to find time today to finish it!
My wife is working on her private license and this is perfect for the dinner table.
Pilot-Friendly Manual for VFR Communications
The Pilot-Friendly Manual for VFR Communications teaches you exactly what to say in every kind of VFR flight situation. Brush up on your radio skills while learning best practices. Includes videos that reinforce lessons with visual examples.
Pilot-Friendly Manual for Flying Companions
This simple, step-by-step, full color manual details 50 useful tasks a non-pilot can complete for you before, during and after a flight. It gets your flying companion involved (and more comfortable) while reducing your workload. Makes a great gift for your flying companion.
"My hardcopy arrived yesterday, and I've only read a few of the chapters, but I have to say this little book you all have put out might be the best I've ever read, when it comes to flying...You've hit the nail on the head, in giving general aviation pilots a whole flight bag's full of goodies to go out there and work on. I just can't say enough for the new book. Thank you for all you and your staff's hard work and efforts."
Pilot Exercise Program
This Pilot-Friendly Manual contains 15 in-flight exercises carefully designed to improve the flying skills of any pilot while creating a fun, “scoreable” challenge. The objective is to experience something new, and then use that experience to improve your overall flying skills.
